The nickname "gate city" comes from later in the 1840s, when Greensboro became a railway transportation hub and a major player in North Carolina's textile industry. Greensboro, NC has other historical distinctions as well, including being the last capitol of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War and the site of the Greensboro Massacre during the Civil Rights Movement. Many of the sites that have hosted these vital moments in the city's history have been commemorated by parks or museums.

The textile industry and railroad industries are still alive in Greensboro, North Carolina to this day, but the city has also branched out into air transportation and aircraft development, with the establishment of a Honda Aircraft corporate headquarters and a Fed-Ex sorting hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport. The city is also focusing especially high tech research. Gateway Research Park, which was developed jointly by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina State R&T University, will house not only high-tech companies but also their unique joint Nanotechnology and Nanoengineering program.

The Nanotechnology program at Gateway Park isn't the only uncommon educational program available in Greensboro, North Carolina either. There's also the Greensboro School of Ballet, one of the few such non-profit schools in the country, and two boarding schools.
